The Challenge

How do you create a fresh interpretation of one of the world's most recognizable paintings while honouring its artistic legacy?

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, housed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, has inspired countless artistic reinterpretations worldwide. Visitors at Fabrique des Lumières needed an experience that could showcase these diverse recreations and the painting's ongoing cultural impact through immersive technology.

Our Approach

The Idea

We built an experience around recreations of The Girl with a Pearl Earring as exhibited at the Mauritshuis. We created four distinct "RE-" environments:
RE-Imagined (photography-driven collages)
RE-Mixed (popular culture mashups)
RE-Designed (multiple painting styles)
RE-Created (3D cube constructions)

Execution

We developed immersive video projections surrounding visitors with dynamic displays. Each environment used different visual techniques—from dreamy photographic collages to tactile 3D cube formations—allowing audiences to experience the painting's versatility across artistic mediums.
